1000-Hour Outboard Service: Timing Belts, Valve Adjustment & Fuel Pumps
The 1000-hour service is the one most owners skip — and the one most likely to leave you broken down offshore. It targets parts that have a finite life: timing belts, high-pressure fuel pumps, and valve clearances that drift out of spec as miles add up.

What's in the 1000-hour service
- Everything in the 300-hour service
- Timing belt replacement (Yamaha F150/200/225/250 and similar)
- High-pressure fuel pump assembly
- Valve clearance check and shim adjustment as needed
- Compression and leak-down test on every cylinder
- Complete cooling-system inspection — pressure test, tear-down, descale as needed
- Throttle position sensor, MAP/MAF, and crank position sensor diagnostic sweep
Why timing belts matter on an outboard
Modern four-strokes are interference engines. If the timing belt snaps at speed, the pistons hit the valves and bend them — often cracking the head in the process. The belt itself is a $200 part. The repair when it lets go is $4,000-$8,000. The 1000-hour service exists to prevent exactly that outcome.
Valve adjustments — quiet but critical
Shim-under-bucket valvetrains drift tighter as the valve seats wear. Once clearance closes up, the valve stops sealing fully, exhaust gas torches the seat, and you've cooked a cylinder. A 1000-hour valve check is cheap insurance.
FAQs
Do all outboards need a timing belt at 1000 hours?
No. Yamaha F150/F175/F200/F225/F250 four-strokes use a belt and need replacement. Mercury Verado and most newer chain-driven motors do not. We'll tell you which interval applies to your motor.
What if I'm at 950 hours and it runs perfect?
Perfect is exactly when you do it. The service is preventative — the failure mode has no warning sign.
